Trail begins for Getty curator accused of plundering artifacts

Reported yesterday in the International Herald Tribune a former curator of the Getty Museum went on trail on Monday accused of illegally obtaining and smuggling from Greece ancient treasures. Removed from Greece 15 years ago a funerary wreathe and statue are at the center of this latest court battle.

The recent crackdown by Greek authorities, a year after the wreathe and statue were returned by the Getty raise serious concerns over the way museums obtain ancient artifacts. It is noteworthy to add that other artifacts including the statue of Aphrodite(see recent post) were obtained even though the origin of where the statue was unearthed were in serious question.

Marion True the former curator of the Getty faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of the charges.
